DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR REPRODUCTION, DEVELOPMENT AND GENETICS  (MRDG)

ABOUT US

The department was established following the merger of DBGL (Developmental Biology and Genetics Laboratory) and CRBME (Center for Reproductive Biology and Molecular Endocrinology) in 1997. We have eleven faculty members and about 60 scientific staff including students, research associates and project assistants. Research is carried out in diverse areas of biology ranging from bacterial and human genetics to signal transduction, mammalian reproduction and developmental biology. An underlying theme is cellular functioning studied at the molecular level. The department operates a number of research grants funded by national and international agencies. In addition, the department is recognized as an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-Advanced Center for Cellular and Molecular Reproduction (since 2001) and receives support from the ICMR, University Grants Commission (UGC)-Special Assistance (since 2002) and Department of Science and Technology (DST)-FIST programs (since 2002).  A broad spectrum of research interests provides an environment in which there is a vigorous exchange of ideas among researchers.

Staff

In addition to routine cellular, biochemical and molecular biological approaches, the department is equipped with a state-of-the-art DNA microarray analysis setup for studying gene expression profiles in developmental systems. The facilities are available for use by research workers from elsewhere on request..

Faculty and students both contribute ideas for departmental activities and collaborate in the running of active seminar groups. These have exposed participants to contemporary advances and interesting ideas in varied areas of biology. The MRDG society, GENESIS, organizes lecture series, student work presentations and annual symposia..
